bright green ball of light

Going West on I-8, there was a fairly large green ball of light descending to the ground at about the horizon to my left. It was bright green, the color of a green light stick, brightly glowing. It was maybe one-eighth the size of the moon, too large and falling too slowly to be a shooting star. My brother was driving, and did see green light out of the corner of his eye, but when I yelled at him to look, he was busy avoiding the driver in the next lane over, who was slowing down and swerving all of a sudden. I'm sure he was seeing it too. I've never seen anything like it, but would like to know what it was.
