Long string of lights moving across the early morning sky above a mountain ridge

A long string of lights, either one long craft with a dark center section or two separate craft, moving NNE to SSW over and along a mountain ridge. I’d estimate I was 12 miles from it. Like a well-lit train moving leisurely across the sky.

series of lights in California desert.

While driving east on S22 in San Diego county, passing by the Borrego Valley Airport, myself and another party in our vehicle witness a series of perhaps 6-8 lights appear in the sky ahead of us. As there was no proper perspective, the lights could have been far away or maybe as close as five miles. This is an unknown.

The lights were as bright as headlights and white in color. (The other witness thought they were "yellowish".) They appeared to be moving slowly from south to north together as a unit so I assumed they were one object. The lights faded, blinked out, or shut off in a few seconds. I have witnessed many flare drops but they last much longer than five seconds.

((ADDENDUM FROM WITNESS))

No, Peter, I have seen many, many military flare drops. At first, I thought this was possible but the sighting was too short of duration for flares. Flares last many minutes. The lights appeared before us on the higway and disappeared in 3-5 seconds. Also, the location (in or about the north Salton Sea area) is not a usual military training ground. However as you suggested, they could have been farther away, perhaps over the Chocolate Mts., which IS a restricted govt "bombing range." Still, the short duration and the appearance that they were traveling south to north makes me dismiss that.

The other witness says that I posted the wrong time. She said it was more like 8:15 pm, not 9:15, as I reported. That could be correct. She also assumed that they were over Font's Point, a spot about 5-7 miles from our observation site, but I informed her of the perspective issue. We just could no tell. Five miles, or 25 miles?

I also have some experience with viewing sky divers, as our airport (Borrego Valley) hosts the Canadian Army paratroopers twice per year. They specialiize in night jumping, BUT they do it to practice in the dark. THEY do not use flares. They are all about surprising the "enemy." As I said there were 6-8 lights in a straight row. Unlikley that jumpers could execute this so perfectly

I researched the local news, MUFON, and the web in general, and have yet to see another report coinciding with mine. I also have a small ad hoc group of local buffs. We call ourselves the Dessert UFO Group, DUG. No members reported anything. I assume that you did not get a second report of this?

As I have told you in the past, I observe the sky nightly and have become accustomed to what aircraft, with their landing lights and position lights look like. This was not that.

The desert sky was clear so I think I can dismiss any atmosperic interference with my vision.

Another mystery along with so many others.

Glare again seen.

Sun glare seen again on Coyote Mountain about eight miles east of Borrego Springs, CA, off Highway S22. I made a similar report on Dec. 26, 2013. In that case a solid object was observed after the glare abated. This time the glare itself took flight slowly and moved off into a gorge in the mountain. This sighting was on different peak of the same mountain but close by. At first sighting the object was stationery prior to flying into the gorge. I do not suspect a helicopter. No aircraft would be in that position on this obscure mountain or make such a dangerous flight.

Date of sighting: December 26, 2013 Time: Approx 4:15 pm Lenght of sighting: 20 seconds.

Place: Sighted from Hiway S22, about 8 miles east of Borrego Springs, California. Object over a peak on Coyote Mountain.

Sighted a sun glare atop a desolate mountain peak while travelling east on S22. I noted an RV at the bottom of this mountain with a similar sun glare. Very familar with this area and knowing that no shiny object could be atop that mountain I stopped the vehicle to get a better look. The object then moved a short distance and the glare abated. The object was plainly visible as a large solid white ball larger than the RV still in view. This object moved slowly over the top of the mountain and down out of sight into the canyon behind.

Small object "floats" against the wind.

Near Clark Dry Lake, 10 miles east of Borrego Springs, Ca, on Rockhouse Road directly next to an official State Parks Benchmark indicating the Anza-Borrego Park boundary.

Approx 11;30 am, Saturday, May 26, 2013 I looked up from my campsite and saw a gleaming metallic object, flashing in the sun, falling, leaf-like from the sky to the north-west of my location approx 120 yards.

It was already at about 50 ft elevation and descending erratically. It soon touched the ground directly next to the Boundary Bench Mark along side this dirt road. I assumed that the object was a mylar balloon or piece of airborne aluminum foil judging from the way it reflected the sun brilliantly and its relative small size as well as its apparent flight path and demeanor which both suggested that it was being carried by the prevailing wind (from the north-west to south-east.). Still I felt obligated to investigate.

I walked down an intersecting access trail never losing site of the now grounded, highly reflective object. It was blindingly bright and continued to flash as it apparently swayed in what bare little breeze there was at ground level.

As I came closer, (approx 50 yds) the object, appearing intentionally, moved away from me as if in an attempt to hide. It did this by "hopping" sideways. I still believed it to be merely the wind. As I came even closer the object quickly "hopped" behind a five-six foot high mound of dirt outside of my view. I continued my approach. A few moment later, ( now about 40 yds away) the object raised directly up from behind the mound exposing about 80 percent of itself and then dropped back down (As if looking at me and then hiding again!). I had now closed the gap to about 30 yds from the object and was attempting to flank it from the right when it began rising and also drifting to the west, AGAINST the prevailing wind! It rose and traveled at approx 15 miles per hour and achieved and altitude of (A rough estimate) approx 500-800 feet before leaving my field of vision.

The sky was clear blue and there were no obstructions between me and it. It also moved, ag! ainst the wind, surely strong at that altitude ( as they usually are here) about one half mile to one mile west-northwest of the landing site and now my location. There were no marks on the ground. It was very warm, over 90 f and I am certain that heat could vector lightweight items up from the desert floor in that heat.

At one point when it was "hopping" away from me I got an excellent view of the item. Instead of being a high polished aluminum as I had thought, it was opaque, I could see right through it. However when it turned just so it reflected the sun as if polished metal. Also surprisingly it was completely smooth and flat as if freshly "ironed". It appeared as if it were a plane of glass or plastic. It was a rectangle of about 3x2 feet. It at one moment turned completely perpendicular to me and appeared then as only a black line perhaps 1/2 inch thick or less. It had three "wires" or antenna all of even length ( maybe 2 1/2 feet) hanging from each of three corners of this rectangle. One corner had no appendage.

I am certain of the prevailing wind, not only from lengthy experience here but there was a brush fire currently in progress near Julian, Ca, about 20 miles west-southwest of my location and in the mountains at about 4000 feet. The smoke from that fire was travelling due east and dropping down to the desert floor nearby. This specific location, Clark Dry Lake, typically has a wind from the west-northwest as it is a adjacent to a canyon and is the lowest pass from the Riverside and Los Angeles areas. The wind from the coast funnels through there to the desert floor.

I was just taking photos with my new camera (Canon SX50 HS) Powershot. I uploaded them onto my computer and noticed a peculiar object in the sky. My camera has 50 x optical zoom lens. When I zoomed in on this object I was a little puzzled . Not sure what it is . Please let me know if possible, if you know what it is? It was not noticable as the shot was being taken.

Disc-shaped object tumbles from starry sky, then bolts. Had faintly illuminated geometric pattern on at least one side.

Having just returned home to the dark desert from light-polluted San Diego, I got out of my car and observed the night sky for a moment. Looking high towards the west, I was gazing upon the Milky Way when I noticed a circular part of the star field (approximately the size of an extended hand) begin to shift slightly.

The stars in this circular area appeared to slowly swirl about, almost as if they were being passed over by a lens. This occurred for a total of approximately 10 seconds.

Then without warning, the circular area began to slowly tumble, revealing that it was what appeared to be a nearly flat disc. As it began its tumble, it shifted its appearance from that of a refracted star field, to a grid-like geometric pattern, very faintly illuminated on a completely black background. The disc tumbled for about 1-2 seconds before stabilizing and speeding off toward the southwest.

I was unable to determine the size or distance of the object.

Shimmering lights were seen above Borrego Springs CA on Summer Soltice Night

My wife and I were having a dusk picnic in Anza Borrego State park outside of Borrego Springs CA in Palm Canyon Campground. WQe had just finished relaxing and eating and were headed back to our motel room in town driving east when we saw five sort of shimering objects on the horizon .shimering spots of light like flames in thr distance. At first I thought it was a fire on the side of Rabbit Peak and even started to call 911 to report the fire I thought was high upon the mountain, but then the lights went out and reappeared as only two larger bright lights a little farther to the south on the horizon and a little higher up in the sky but still close to the horizon. looking east they stayed stationary like the 5 lights for about 2 minutes and then they also faded away.It was too dark to tell if they were high on the mountain or just above the mountains ridge line. they were seen is uninhabited very rugged terrain and the lights could not have been campers because they were too far away to be that bright by campers and it was 110 degrees that day. no one would have been up there and because it was dark I couldnt tell if the lights originated on the mountan or above the ridge line in the sky. My wife and I both saw them They were not planes because they did not move but also they did not blink like plane lights but shimmered like glowing hovering flames or pulses of light

Superstition Hill UFO Sighting. Summer 1997. I went camping off of Old Kane Springs Road, Borrego Springs, California, just south of Highway 78, and north of El Centro in the Anza Borrego Desert BLM lands. Arriving just before sundown to meet up with a friend who had arrived earlier in the day.

My friend carried on and on about unmarked gun metal blue jets flying very low passes at very high speed over the area since early afternoon. I did notice jets flying upon arrival but it wasn’t surprising since I knew the Navy’s proving grounds (mysteriously called Superstition Hills) was just a mile or so southeast of our campsite. You could see the chalky white hills slightly poking up from the desert floor with commercial air traffic from El Centro Airport in the background.

After setting up my tent and popping a beer we enjoyed talking and watching the full moon rise from the southwest as El Centro’s plane traffic was visible to the southeast. Within 15 minutes of sundown, out of the blue, two gun metal blue F18s whizzed over us at extremely high speed and extremely low--lower than I’ve ever seen. And they came around again, criss-crossing each other in the skies at least three more times. My friend went bonkers, proclaiming he wasn’t a liar and I couldn’t argue with him. This was amazing and I ran to get my binoculars.

With binoculars readily in hand I chased them around the sky as my friend frantically searched for his pair. At one point, the two jets lined up together side-by-side very low bearing southwest towards the direction of Table Mountain easily zooming directly overhead at over 400 mph. On approach, they split up and disappeared over the first set foothills. My friend was still searching for his specs as I watched, totally stunned, as a large glowing presence rising from them where the planes disappeared. I had no idea what I was witnessing as the entire side of Table Mountain lit up and then I freaked – small red orbs started to manifest below the whitish glow.

As the glow grew brighter these red orbs crested the mountain in formation of a huge clock. The lights continued to rise together in a fixed circular formation until an entire ‘clock’ formation was visible. In the middle of the clock of red lights, a nebulous blob glowed brightly when all of a sudden, two smaller red lights at 4 and 7 split away and flew off in opposite directions at enormous speed, disappearing over and around Table Mountain. I surmised they were the jets I had just seen, but it was hard to tell. The shimmering red orb clock formation then rose up over the crest entirely in view and disappeared over another ridge and the lights dimmed into darkness. The hillsides went back to normal moon lit desert and I was screaming aloud that this was the wildest thing I have ever witnessed. But then it got wilder.

The strange giant ‘clock lights’ had appeared and then disappeared into the mountain landscape in less than a minute – all occurring as my friend finally found his binoculars in a futile attempt to zero on the subject of my pointers. All he could make out was the glowing mountains, but I excitedly recounted in detail what I had just seen. We relayed the experience to one another for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes as we scoured the sky and landscape with our binoculars. We got tired of looking with the binoculars and grabbed another beer to begin settling into camping, when very casually my friend suddenly pointed about in 70 degree ups towards the southerly sky and said, “what the *** is that?” I looked to where he was pointing but I couldn’t see anything. I was looking past it! The moon was full and bright and not a cloud in the sky, a billion stars, and right there about 1000 feet off the ground was an “invisible” moving object. It was very nebulous with no hard visible edges. Within or perhaps attached to it were a random arrangement of lights in varying brightness – virtually indistinguishable from stars in the sky. It was insane we could not make out the actual shape. This nebulous blob of sparkly lights appeared to about 2000 feet off the ground and about 2000 feet away – perhaps the size of a smallish blimp. It was also totally silent. We grabbed our binoculars, if you looked directly at it, it essentially disappeared into the background. You could really only see it if you looked to the side or below or above it, reminding me of how we were told to view Andromeda by looking to the side of it, allowing our peripheral vision to ascertain the galaxy. This was! clearly some form of cloaking technology, but the shape of the cloaked craft was indiscernible.

Moving extremely slowly from the northwest to the southeast, at various points it would just stop in the air, hovering silent, and discharge what appeared to be a bunch of flashbulbs going off in random order as if it was trying to blend into the sea of stars behind a full moon night sky. We continued watching this “cloaked” air machine for at least 15 minutes. It moved ever so slowly stopping at least three more times to “impersonate the night sky” light show as it moved over Superstition Hills and stopped again. We noticed at this point there were no more jets; in fact, El Centro’s plane traffic had completely stopped with only this smallish nebulous sparkly cloud in the southeastern sky. We wondered aloud if the Navy had told the airport to hold off takeoffs and landings.

We were actually getting bored of watching it through our binoculars when all of a sudden it took off like a streak of light towards the southeast edge of El Centro. It had to have moved at several hundred miles an hour – or faster - from a dead stop and then made a dead stop right at the edge of Highway 78 about a mile southeast of us. All this time is moved so slow, it was stunning how it suddenly moved and stopped so fast.

While we stood there trying to process what this hovering nebulous sparkly blob thing was, it made another light show and suddenly in a blink of an eye it streaked away disappearing into the horizon towards the Yuma proving grounds. We couldn’t make any sense of it but I’ll never forget it. A minute or two later the El Centro air traffic started up again.

I was a skeptic of UFO stories until this happened. Was this aliens? I don’t know but if it was, given the earlier presence of the F18s and their accompanying the ‘mother ship’ as it lifted over the mountains, the U.S. Navy is definitely in cahoots with them.

Gigantic Triangle directly overhead, moving silently...

I was visiting Borrego Springs in Desert State Park, CA. Being from the East Coast, I'd never seen the stars so clearly, so I was staring up at the Milky Way around 10 PM in a garden with a full 360 degree view of the sky. I had been studying the stars for a few minutes when the leading point of something intruded into my field of vision. The object was passing from behind me, directly overhead, and continued to slowly pass over for a long time, widening out steadily to a size which appeared large enough to cover the entire town. There was no sound whatsoever. When the rear of the vessel came into my view I was startled, as I abruptly saw the straight line of stars reappearing behind it. I did not go inside to get the others in the house because I did not want to lose sight of the craft in the night sky. I continued to keep my eyes on it as it slowly crossed the valley and went over the mountains. Those mountains are thirty miles from Borrego (facing toward San Diego), and the vessel was still quite large (my thumbnail size at arm's length) as it passed over the mountains and out of sight. Very impressive and unmistakable UFO sighting. Quite a first for me!! Thank you very much for creating and maintaining this website. It is a very dedicated and impressive undertaking, and gives people a way of sharing these experiences when there is no other logical method available. Again, Thanks!!
